The Canarian town of Santa Cruz de Tenerife celebrates the arrival of spring with its traditional May Festival. These festivities stand out for the high involvement of local citizens and the numerous contests designed for them. The May Festival actually start on the 22nd April, with the opening speech, from the hall of the Municipal Palace, of the local writer Mr. Rafael Zurita.
Throughout the month, different activities and contests will be open to the public, where the protagonists are the ordinary citizens. Those who visit the city during the festivities will enjoy several art exhibitions, such as “the other face of Africa” or “Santa Cruz, read city.”
Music plays a key role during the holidays. There will be numerous concerts, both outdoors and in auditoriums and other facilities. Those interested in the festival, will also enjoy the colorful traditional dances on the 20th April, which coincides with the International Dance Day.
With regards to sport, the town council has organized several championships and disciplines, ranging from billiards, table tennis and runs and bicycle races, special mention for the celebration of the U-22 Spanish Racquetball Championships.
The Feria de las Flores, Plantas y Artesanias (The Flower, Plants and Traditional Handicrafts Fair) is held from the 30th April until the 4th May, from 10am to 21pm. This event is very popular and includes children’s workshops and a bonsai exhibition.
One of the most appreciated events is the wine festival, Vino, Vidi, Vici held from the 1st to the 4th of May. In this popular fair, people come together under the tents specially set up for this event, to enjoy the wines from local wineries and where one can taste the best local wines, as well as a selection of tapas with a Canarian flair.
Coinciding with the 4th May, a bank holiday in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the awards for the children’s drawing and painting contests, Cruces Escolares, amateur Flower Arrangement, crossings natural flowers, flowers and plants and traditional Canarian handicrafts.
